MLA Legislature Report
Alana DeLong, MLA

Education : An additional $303.3 million will be invested in 15 new schools and 6 new major preservation and modernization projects over the next four years, as well as the purchase of 130 new steel-framed modular classrooms this fiscal school year alone. The investment will address health and safety concerns, community growth and enrollment changes, and will bring the province's funding for school infrastructure to nearly $1.3 billion over the next three years.

Locked In Pensions: Albertans age 50 and over have increased access to locked-in retirement savings. Albertans leaving a Registered Pension Plan will have better access to their retirement savings as the result of changes to the Employment Pension Plans Act regulations. Effective November 1st, people have a one-time option to unlock up to 50 per cent of their locked-in pension contributions after exiting an eligible pension plan. For more information, please visit www.finance.gov.ab.ca/publications/pensions/index.html.

Affordable Housing : Albertans in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray and High Prairie will have access to 150 new affordable housing units, thanks to almost $12 million in funding that is being allocated under phase two of the Canada-Alberta Affordable Housing Program. The Canada-Alberta Affordable Housing Program assists in the creation of sustainable rental housing for low- to moderate-income Albertans, through the construction of new or renovated affordable housing units. Phase two of this program will commit at least $63 million over two years to affordable housing projects in Alberta. Costs are shared equally by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta. For more information, please visit the Canada-Alberta Affordable Housing Program and Alberta Seniors and Community Supports websites at www.seniors.gov.ab.ca and www.cmhc.ca.

Accessible Housing: The government should continue to make positive strides in recognizing the needs of persons with disabilities and seniors and improving accessibility for all Albertans. As such, I fully support that all government funded housing should be safe, barrier-free and accessible to all Albertans, regardless of age or physical ability.

A special thanks to the constituents who have taken the time to write to me on various Alberta issues. Your thoughtful and well expressed ideas keep Alberta moving towards an even brighter future

Wishing all of you a Happy Thanksgiving that is full with a rich harvest of friends, family and memories as we give thanks for our blessings.
