Albertans Will Benefit From Improved Technology Coordination In Government

I have been appointed to lead a committee that will make recommendations to the Minister of Restructuring and Government Efficiency with respect to improving coordination and standardizing government's computer systems. Currently, most ministries have unique information and communications technology environments, resulting in a diverse inventory of servers, databases, local area networks and program delivery applications. By improving the coordination of these various systems, government will be better able to manage the technology and control increasing costs.

New Child Care Agreement Respects Parents' Rights To Choice And Flexibility

The Alberta government has reached a child care deal with the federal government, that will give parents the support they need when choosing the right child care for their children. This deal allows Alberta to invest in a wide range of service delivery options that build on existing and new programs that support parents, whether they are working, going to school or staying at home to care for their children. Child care is a provincial responsibility and Alberta will continue to define and monitor programs and service standards.

Higher Revenue Allows For Increased Investments In Priority Areas

Strong energy prices in the first quarter are a key factor in the increased revenue forecast as reported in the Government of Alberta's First Quarter Fiscal Update. Capital Plan spending in 2005-06 is now forecast to reach nearly $4 billion dollars. The province's savings are also increasing. To help fulfill commitments made in the Access to the Future Act, $250 million is being added to the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund. Disaster and emergency assistance has also been increased by $226 million due to flooding, forest fires, BSE and pine beetle infestations.

Wishing all of you a very happy Thanksgiving.
