Calgary Seniors And Persons With Disabilities To Benefit
From New And Modernized Housing: More than 800 local
seniors and persons with disabilities will have new or updated homes,
thanks to capital funding from the government. The Affordable Supportive
Living Initiative and the Lodge Modernization and Improvement programs
are providing more than $9.2 million to help develop 103 new affordable
supportive living units and 708 modernized and improved affordable
units in 12 projects at 11 different facilities in Calgary. The
projects will benefit the local economy by generating more than
$27 million in construction-related spending. With this year’s
funding, the province has invested $365 million in capital funding
since 1999 to support the development or modernization of about
7,800 supportive living and lodge units. The funding reflects the
Alberta government’s commitment to improve the quality, supply
and client choice in the continuing care system and to meet the
changing needs of Albertans.
Registration Services For Alberta Health Care Insurance
Expand: Albertans can now register for the Alberta
Health Care Insurance Plan or update their information at 20 different
registry agent offices across the province. The service will be
provided at no cost to Albertans. The Alberta government eliminated
health care premiums January 1st saving Albertans and Alberta businesses
about $1 billion annually. This saved families who paid premiums
$1,056/year. Although premiums have been eliminated, Albertans still
need to register with the health care insurance plan. Registry agents
will process application forms and Alberta Health and Wellness will
mail the health care card directly to the applicants. The registry
agents do not have access to personal health information. Albertans
who have already registered for health care coverage do not need
to re apply.
Albertans Invited To Shape The Future Of Education:
Albertans are invited to take part in a series of conversations
about the future of education. Minister Dave Hancock announced 10
community conversations with Albertans in eight different locations
in the province in April, May and June. The community conversations
in Calgary are scheduled for May 23 and June 17. Using an innovative
generative dialogue approach, Inspiring Education will
engage Albertans in extensive discussions about education as a foundation
for the future societal and economic success of the province. The
perspectives and ideas gathered through this process will be used
to develop a policy framework which describes the overall direction,
principles and long-term goals for education in Alberta. A conversation
kit will be available in mid-April for schools, neighbourhoods,
businesses, and organizations to offer their thoughts and insights.
Albertans are also invited to participate in online moderated discussions
of a range of perspectives and ideas on the Inspiring Education
website. The process will culminate in a two-day provincial conversation,
to be held October 18 - 20 in Edmonton. For more information or
to participate in a community conversation, visit http://inspiringeducation.alberta.ca
