MLA Legislature Report
Alana DeLong, MLA

Calgary Canoe Club:

In partnership with the City of Calgary, the Calgary Canoe Club was approved for a Community Initiatives Program grant in the amount of $6,400.00 to assist with the purchase of Dragon Boat Paddling equipment. This equipment will be used by the Calgary Canoe Club and participating Dragon Boat teams competing at the Calgary Community Dragon Boat Festival which is open to all members of the community. Dragon Boat Paddling programs are currently being offered for Calgary schools, community youth groups and summer youth paddling camps run by the Canoe Club. Dragon Boat is a safe and fun introduction to the sport of paddling for all. Get outside and get active My sincere congratulations to Lynda Roberts for her efforts in submitting the application for funding.

Woodcliff United Church:

I would to congratulate George Olsen, Chair of the Stewardship Committee, for his effort in making an application to the on behalf of Woodcliff United Church for a Community Facility Enhancement Program grant in the amount of $25,656.00. Woodcliff United Church is used extensively by many community groups, including Inn From The Cold, that are not affiliated with the church. To enhance access to the facility an elevator was installed to serve the elderly and disabled; and a new washroom with shower facilities was also constructed to provide services to the homeless families that stay overnight with the Inn From the Cold program.

New Calgary Law Information Centre:

Albertans who choose to represent themselves in Court have another resource to help them navigate the legal system. The new Law Information Centre (LInC) in the Calgary Courts Centre provides resources serving as a vital link to the justice system. Law Information Centres, assist Albertans with a variety of issues such as landlord and tenant disputes, collections, divorce, traffic, civil and criminal matters, and appeal and surrogate matters. These centres offer services including in-person legal information, assistance in locating and completing forms, and referrals to other justice services. The centres are a result of a collaborative effort of representatives from Alberta Justice, the three courts, Canadian Bar Association, Legal Aid Alberta, Alberta Law Line, Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, Alberta Law Reform Institute, Native Counselling Services of Alberta and a number of non-government organizations. Since opening in 2007, the Law Information Centres have helped more than 74,000 Albertans.

Entrepreneurs looking to open and operate a business in Calgary have a new tool to cut paperwork and reduce the red tape. BizPaL, an online business licence and permit tool, is an innovative service that provides entrepreneurs with simplified access to the information on permits and licences they need to get started. BizPaL is a unique partnership involving federal, provincial, territorial, regional and local governments.
