MLA Legislature Report
Alana DeLong, MLA

Low-income Calgarians One Step Closer to Home Ownership: The Alberta government has allocated more than $2.6 million to the Norfolk Housing Association and Calgary-based Trico Homes to develop 58 affordable homes that will target low-income families and individuals. The development will be located at 99 Panatella Hill NW and feature 55 units for families and three units for individuals. These units, developed for Albertans with low to moderate income, are integrated with a larger development that will see an additional 155 units for sale at market value. Provincial funding, combined with a 5% donation by Trico Homes, will be utilized to provide home ownership for qualified families. This donation can be used either to help with a down payment on the property or with monthly mortgage payments. The development project is part of the Alberta government’s five-year strategy to create more than 11,000 affordable housing units by 2012. This capital investment complements the government’s four-point plan for economic recovery, which calls for keeping an eye on spending, using savings to protect programs and services for Albertans while keeping taxes low, continuing to invest in infrastructure and promoting the province on the world stage. Preventing Family Violence and Bullying: Congratulations to Sonshine Community Services who recently received funding in the amount of $37,500 through the Prevention and Family Violence and Bullying Incentive Fund, which is administered by Alberta Children and Youth Services. Sonshine Community Services is a one year, second stage shelter that provides support and counseling for women and children fleeing family violence. The funding will allow the Centre to provide counseling for the children, along with parenting training and assistance for their mothers. This will allow the children to develop relationship building skills and prevent the recurrence of bullying and family violence as they grow older.
