MLA Legislature Report
Alana DeLong, MLA

Productive Fall Sitting of Legislature:
The last sitting of the Legislature ended November 27. The Legislature
will resume sitting in February 2010. I wish to share with you some
of the highlights of the last Session. New legislation that will
see Alberta healthcare facilities and emergency medical technicians
report all gunshot and stab wounds to police is among the highlights
of the 2009 Fall sitting of the Alberta Legislature. The Gunshot
and Stab Wound Mandatory Disclosure Act would also require
healthcare professionals to report any relevant details about the
case, including the patient’s name and the location in which
the injury occurred. With this Act, the Government of Alberta is
taking another step towards improving the strength and safety of
our communities. The information police will receive will provide
yet another tool that will help prevent further violence and crime
in our province.
Another highlight of the Fall sitting is the passing of a Government
motion that will see the return of Alberta Capital Bonds
in early 2010. This retail savings bond program will be targeted
at capital infrastructure projects that will keep tens of thousands
of Albertans working, and help guide our economy towards recovery
and renewed prosperity. Continuing to invest in public infrastructure
is just one part of our government’s four-point economic recovery
plan. To learn more about this incentive please visit http://www.finance.alberta.ca/business/savings/index.html.
The Fall Session of the Legislature also saw the passing of several
other important pieces of legislation including Bill 48 –
the Crown’s Right of Recovery Act, Bill 62 –
the Emergency Health Services Amendment Act, Electric Statutes
Amendment Act, 2009 and Bill 205 – the Election Finances
and Contributions Disclosure (Third Party Advertising) Amendment
Act, 2009.
