MLA Legislature Report
Alana DeLong, MLA

Bowness Adult Memorial Monument: I am delighted
to let you know about a wonderful new project in Bowness. I had
the pleasure of presenting to the Calgary Parks Foundation with
a cheque from the Community Facility Enhancement Program in the
amount of $12,815 for the Bowness Adult Monument Project. The memorial
project is an important lasting tribute to the residents of Bowness
where families may have the names of their beloved ones engraved
on the memorial as a remembrance. The official unveiling of the
monument will be held in June 2010 at MacIntosh Park at 76 Street
and 39th Avenue NW. Congratulations to Lily Llaguno of Calgary Parks
Foundation who assisted Don and Marg Weber in preparing the application
for funding. To find out more about this project please contact
Don and Marg Weber at 403-288-5561.
Traffic Circle: I'm pleased to inform you
that Alberta Transportation and its contractor had completed the
construction of the pedestrian sidewalk under the TransCanada Highway
and made improvements to the area adjacent to the community entrance
roundabout. I have worked closely with Alberta Transportation and
the City of Calgary to ensure that the residents of your community
were satisfied with the work completed. Alberta Transportation now
considers the future maintenance of the circle to be the responsibility
of the City of Calgary or others that may enter into agreement with
the community. You can count on me to lend a gardener’s hand
with future grooming of the circle! I wish to sincerely thank all
the residents of Valley Ridge for bringing the matter to my attention
and for their understanding and patience.
Alberta Innovation Voucher Program: Congratulations
to Erwan Oger of Alberta Hydrogen Way Ltd. and Sandra Schulze of
AdSpots Inc for their participation in the Alberta Innovation Voucher
Pilot Program (AIVP). AIVP assists small businesses and entrepreneurs
with getting their innovative ideas into the marketplace. Vouchers
can be put towards up to 75% of the cost of specialized services
from an approved, non-profit service provider such as labs, fabrication
centres or intellectual property managers. Businesses can receive
only one $10,000 voucher and one $50,000 voucher over the life of
their business. Across the province, 204 vouchers worth almost $6
million were awarded to companies in 33 communities. Launched in
November 2008, the program, which is the first of its kind in Canada,
was developed as part of Alberta’s Action Plan: Bringing
Technology to Market. For more information about the program
and a list of all voucher recipients, please visit www.technology.gov.ab.ca.
Families Benefit From Expansion of Positive Parenting
Program: The Alberta government has expanded the Positive
Parenting Program (Triple P) to 45 Parent Link Centres across
the province, giving parents greater access to a program proven
to help build stronger families. Triple P is designed to assist
families with flexible, timely support when they need it most. The
program offers parents advice and resources tailored to their unique
needs to handle common issues and more complex situations that can
result when caring for children. Services range from offering general
information or guidance, tip sheets, parenting advice and workshops
to offering more advanced support to help parents experiencing significant
behavioural issues with their children. Triple P is offered from
Parent Link Centres free-of-charge. In 2010/11, the Alberta
government will invest $1 million in Safe Communities funding to
support the continued expansion of Triple P, which will include
additional training for Parent Link Centre staff across the province.

2010 Winter Olympics: In March, I had the
pleasure of volunteering at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics (at
no cost to taxpayers). To be a part of history with Canada
bringing home the most gold medals of any country was exhilarating.
It brought back a flood of memories of the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
I was especially impressed with Alberta House who showcased its
exquisite cuisine by tantalizing the taste buds of visitors from
around the world. The world experienced the taste of Alberta as
food products from across the province delighted visitors while
showcasing the province’s diverse gourmet offerings. Thousands
of kilograms of beef, potatoes, bison, honey, mushrooms and Saskatoon
berries made their way to Vancouver to be featured on the menu at
Alberta House. Congratulations to Brad Smoliak, Executive Chef of
Alberta House for creating a menu that went beyond the ordinary
and featured products from across Alberta. Throughout the games,
I, like many Canadians, felt such pride at every opportunity to
showcase our great nation to the world. With hundreds of business
contacts made and resulting media exposure that would have cost
about $70 million to purchase, Albertans will see lasting benefits
from the business, tourism and cultural promotion conducted during
the Olympics. On behalf of all Calgary Bow constituents, I sincerely
wish to congratulate all the athletes and volunteers for making
the games so successful.
Wishing you a happy Easter
filled with all the joy of Spring
A special thanks all my constituents who have taken the time to
call, write and meet with me over the past several years. Your many
well thought out comments and advice has been of immeasurable value
to our Government and to all the people of Alberta. As always ,
my staff and I are available to answer any questions and/or concerns
that you may have.
