Bowness Receives Provincial Grant To Improve Community Safety: BowWest Community Support Services Society is a recent recipient of a Wild Rose Foundation grant. Four times a year, the provincial foundation awards up to $50,000 to non-profit organizations working to improve community safety and deliver programs for seniors and families. BowWest Community Support Services Society is one of 26 non-profit organizations to share $1.1 million in this most recent installment of the Wild Rose Foundation’s Quarterly Grants Program. The BowWest Community Support Services Society, which is located in the Bowness area, will use its $29,800 grant to support the Parent Child Mother Goose Program. The program helps develop structured, positive play and literacy experiences for families facing barriers. The grants are administered through the Wild Rose Foundation to non-profit and voluntary sector organizations, providing valuable services to Albertans. Organizations are eligible for one grant in a three-year period. To be eligible, the organizations must also be legally registered as a society, non-profit company, charity or service in Alberta for a minimum of one year, and the nature and scope of their activities must be related to health, social service or community service. The organizations’ cash operating reserves can’t exceed their operating expenses for the year. Wild Rose Foundation grant submission deadlines are Jan. 1, Apr. 1, July 1 and Oct. 1. The Wild Rose Foundation is the Government of Alberta’s principal agency responsible for promoting and supporting Alberta’s non-profit and voluntary sector. Government Outlines Long-Term Alberta Oil Sands Development Plan: The Government of Alberta has released a comprehensive 20 year strategic plan for Alberta’s oil sands that aims to reduce the environmental footprint, optimize economic growth, and increase the quality of life in the province’s oil sands regions. Responsible Actions: A Plan for Alberta’s Oil Sands outlines immediate actions and long-term strategies that address economic, social, and environmental challenges and opportunities in the oil sands regions. The plan highlights current efforts such as carbon capture and storage, and strengthens the approach for land reclamation, cumulative effects management, and environmental conservation. The strategy is closely aligned with provincial and regional initiatives such as the Provincial Energy Strategy and the Land-use Framework. The strategic plan was based on extensive stakeholder consultations, which were outlined in three reports: Investing in our Future: Responding to the Rapid Growth of Oil Sands Development; Multi-stakeholder Committee Final Report; and Aboriginal Consultation Final Report. Alberta’s oil sands regions contain the second largest petroleum reserves in the world and play a key role in the long-term economic growth and energy security for Alberta and Canada.
